COLORADO SPRINGS, CO: Back in March, karaoke was shut down as was bars and restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic. As both have started to reopen, but karaoke by nature is an activity that relies on sharing microphones and singing. Unfortunately, it projects respiratory droplets. It was at the time thought to be one of the last events to return.

Prior to the pandemic, Legends Rock Bar was for many years the hot spot to be at on a Friday night. This southeast Colorado Springs haunt had a previous capacity with 268 people. What was the main attraction? Amateur singers doing this activity. Many people would be singing either good or bad renditions of “County Roads” or “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

However, during the pandemic, many people thought karaoke would not return including Ronny Lynch. Lynch runs karaoke nights under Third Leg Entertainment. Lynch said, “There was a time we didn’t know if it would come back.” In the meantime, Lynch thought of a brainstorming way to safely host a favorite event/pastime. He said he is glad he did.

Must-Follow Rules for Indoor Events

Last month, bars and restaurants were notified that the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment would allow it if establishments followed rules for indoor events. This information is according to El Paso County Public Health spokeswoman Michelle Hewitt.

The CDPHE also notes this on its website: “Research and the CDC suggest that activities like singing may project respiratory droplets in greater quality and over greater distance, increasing the risk of Corona Virus transmission, particularly with prolonged exposure.

Though karaoke can take place, it is still an activity that adds risk to exposure, Hewitt said. So it is important all customers follow the guidelines on proper social distancing. People who are sick and/or have COVID-19 symptoms should stay home.

Bars, karaoke Jockeys Taking it Slow

In Colorado Springs, you could find karaoke at 20 bars around Colorado Springs on a Friday on Saturday night prior to COVID-19. Now, it’s more like 10. Thunder and Buttons, Hatch Cover and Deuces Wild Brewery are having abbreviated karaoke nights.
